Oma Kuhlmann's Rouladen Recipe

This is our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. We serve the Rouladen with mashed yellow potatoes, German Rotkohl, carrots, fresh salad and mushrooms cooked in a wine sauce.

Process

  1. Lay beef strips out on a clean surface.
  2. Spread 1 tsp. of mustard evenly on each strip.
  3. Lay one strip of bacon on each strip.
  4. Next place onions on strip at least 8-10 per beef strip.
  5. Place a half-sliced pickle in the center of your beef strip.
  6. Then roll up the beef slices, tightly and secure with 1 or 2 toothpicks.
  7. Heat lard in a frying pan. Generously brown the Rouladen on all sides. Browning them will ensure a rich & flavourful gravy.
  8. Set Rouladen in a large roaster.
  9. Keep all drippings in frying pan and make your gravy according to package directions.
  10. Pour gravy to cover Rouladen in roaster and Bake at 350°F for 3 hours.
